2015 Quarterly Check-in (1st Quarter)

Greetings!

Here we are at April! I had lofty plans for weekly posts, and more in-depth postings to build things, a new FlockHosting.com and so much more in the pipeline, then life hit. For some of you who have figured it out, I’m a dad now, and with that comes a new type of late-night 🙂 No more always just poking at servers, but feedings and diaper changes!

What you may not know is you all already know her name, as we have 2 servers named after her – she’s beautiful and 8 months going on 9 months in April, she’s Lilly Grace Brown:

Okay ticket #20392, You're fixed!

Okay ticket #20392, You’re fixed!

But things while different doesn’t change the spirit or desire of things here at FlockHosting, simply means “It’s time to grow” just as Lilly is, it’s time to really step things up a notch and see what we can do to make FlockHosting grow not just on the ministry of free Church Hosting, but too in higher monthly revenues to support this growing girl’s needs for cute onesies, delicious formula, and of course what every little girl needs… A pony.

So to that end I have a few things to go over here today, so sit back and enjoy!

blog-post-wpmanagedManaged WordPress

For many many many many many years I’ve worked with customers to fine tune, repair, and manage WordPress installs, so why not make it into a service. I’m wanting to grow, and for those of you who are growing your WordPress installs, you may not know all the tricks of performance or security – you are good at writing and keeping your site content up to date, let FlockHosting do the heavy lifting.

How much is this service going to cost? Just $10 more a month on top of your current hosting rate, and it will include some great plugins, some great tools, and enhanced security & backup to keep your site running smooth.

Full details coming soon to FlockHosting.com!

It’s been awhile since the branding got updated, subtle but cleaner, and I had planned to quickly release a website to follow, but with services like Managed WordPress I wanted to get all my ducks in a row, and thus ducks are still lining up!

The new site will introduce a few new products, one is actually “Email Servers” which I hadn’t planned, but demand has been there, and I’m already branching out to a few folks who have the need – when can you expect to see it? Lord willing by Friday, I’m hoping tonight and tomorrow to really get some final artwork done and content written up and online – hopefully it’ll be polished and ready to go by Friday!

I want to grow grow grow, but currently my funds say no no no! 8 months ago I created a crowd funding site to get things rolling to raise $10,000 to really kick up Church Hosting a notch, sadly not one donation – but then again 8 months ago this little girl was joining the world so time really put into it for getting the word out there and seeing if folks really wanted to help – probably wasn’t what it should’ve been, a more stable 8 month old who’s biggest problem is teeth at the moment should allow for some bigger pushes.

What is it I want $10,000 to do? The top 3 would be:

  • Email Only Service (similar to Google Apps)
  • Massive Storage
  • Pre-Fab WordPress Setup (fill in the blanks!)

I want to really make it so incredibly easy for churches to get going, the only emails I’ll get will be “God Bless You!” and smile knowing God’s churches are getting online and functional super-easy! I want collaborative email servers with shared calendars and contacts, not to mention I’d love to have a few more terabytes of storage to throw at churches with VIDEO and AUDIO archives!

Folks can still donate online view the crowdfunding site – but I’m hoping to really get something up for donations and fun here in the coming months, hopefully after taxes and a few more teeth I can do a crowd funding option proper!

work-n-manGrowing Growing Growing

Not only do I want to see FlockHosting grow, I need it to. It’s not just a business supporting me, it supports my family and growth of things like Church Hosting, what’s coming up is quite exciting:

  • Reseller Plans
  • VPS Servers
  • Dedicated Servers
  • Email Servers
  • Managed WordPress
  • Windows Hosting
  • and more!

I don’t want to slow down this year, while I know on occasion as 3 FlockHosting customers do offer motherly advice of “deal with this in the morning, go to bed!” I’m getting a new balance, a new burst of energy, and I’m excited about what growth will mean for my Family and for services like Church Hosting! I want to grow things to be amazing, stable and strong for all customers!

So stay tuned! I’m going to really focus on a few writing days where I can get a lot more of the posts I had hoped to get written up going for you guys, spending a lot of time writing for my ministry online called Light Unto Ministries and getting some great posts written up too! So a busy busy man with a busy busy life! Prayers are appreciated and anywhere and everywhere you can spread the word about FlockHosting, please do!

State of the Server Address

What a week! For me aside from the setup of Grace, I’ve built out 8 additional servers for a long-time server customer (rebuilding his fleet) and still have Church Hosting hardware coming along,  it’s been a whirlwind! Migration

So what’s this post about? Well it’s a way for me to apologize for hiccups folks had, some had issues with email, some with versions of PHP, some with MySQL, wasn’t a flawless move, but never is in some areas when it comes to upgrading software, but the email and password issues, just did not foresee happening, in any migration we’ve never had these sorts of issues, but smoother sailing is here! I’m sorry you guys had issues, and I’m sorry where things just completely fell flat, but working to ensure things like that don’t happen again!  For now, here’s a quick rundown with all the migrations where we stand with hardware:

Server: Grace

Grace is up and running, we had some minor hiccups with the migration for folks using older scripts, we are using some newer tech, and older scripts aren’t playing nice – working on getting everything running smoothly, if you are having issues please let me know!

A few folks have reported password issues, cPanel works, FTP doesn’t, unsure of the cause, but if you are having this issue open a ticket and I can reset your password across the board, if wanting a quicker fix and can login to cPanel, simply change the password should update FTP.

Lastly Email filtering, this has been a big issue for everyone lately spam is horrible right now, and even FlockHosting Servers are getting blocked for legitimate email! I’m working on a few options to try and get things running cleaner at no cost, so hang tight! If it’s really bad please open a ticket and I’ll help however I can!

Server: Lilly

Lilly is running great, it’s been online since late July, and problems have been very few, additional memory and alternative MySQL configuration have run very smoothly, but too like other servers in the fleet some issues persist with spam, but all in all this new kid on the block is running great!

Servers: Faith & Shepherd

This weekend (Saturday) these servers will be retired and shutdown. They have served FlockHosting well for a LONG time! I’ll be pulling one last backup tonight just-in-case, should anyone be coming late to the party of migrations and saying “BUT CHUCK! IT’S ALL BROKE!” I’ll have one final snapshot of what was, but moving forward Grace is your kid!

Server: Church

Now this is the latest in the works, I am hoping to have the hardware at some point soon! This will combine Fellowship & Koinonia into a single server which will have even more power and storage!

Server: Ruth

Ruth isn’t going anywhere, running on some newer hardware itself, it will be the last of the low-volume servers on-network, customers should expect any migration plans for this server, you are safe! 🙂

Thank You!

I really appreciate everyone’s patience in these moves! I know not always easy to have your site be in-transit, or email issues, password issues etc. but as always I’m working to ensure you are having as few issues as possible! Stay tuned, Church Hosting likely moving this next week! So new IP, new hardware, stay tuned & Have a BLESSED weekend!
