Rolling Reboots & Security Updates

Working on the final schedule with the datacenter to have some hands on deck at the servers as the servers all get some security updates that recently came to light, as well as sneaking in some core software upgrades for security that were planned for later in the month – the reboots will start at 12:01AM (CDT) each night, and in the test servers we did this on it took ~60minutes max on average, however in a few servers which needed a disk check, the outage lasted 2 hours – I wish I could give exacts, but this is being done for security and stability.

Currently we have the FlockHosting server on deck first for 6/11/2010 – at 12:01AM (CDT) the process will begin, FlockHosting.com will be effectively offline – as I have more dates and servers I will post a note – some servers are newer and have these patches so they will not be effected. Stay tuned for info on when your server will have a maintenance window.

Updates Tonight

Across all servers doing some software updates, may cause brief outages (~5 minutes) as things restart/refresh with new versions, some security, some performance adjustments as well as the ground work to new firewall configurations!

If you feel your site is out for an extended period of time, please do not hesitate to open a trouble ticket. Prayers and Patience Appreciated.

Emergency Maintenace [Update]

Tonight I received notification from hardware monitoring that one of the drives on Faith is currently experiencing errors, and instead of waiting a few days and replacing it, steps are being taken to have it changed this evening to avoid extended outage if the drive does fail entirely.

This will mean an outage this evening, and I do apologize for the late noticeĀ  at 8PM PST (10CST) the server will be taken offline for ~30 minutes to swap out the drive, 30 minutes is of course the best case scenario the Datacenter could provide me with, so I ask for your prayers over this transition to the new drive that it goes smoothly and things come back up quickly – and that the hands of the crew in the data center are blessed with a smooth replacement.

As soon as the server is back online and things are operating properly I will update this post as well as statuses on Facebook and Twitter – I am also working to label all customers in the newsletter database with which servers they occupy so that I can send out targeted email notes to folks on when things are going up/down or changing, so thanks for your patience and prayers! I’ll update with more in a few hours!

UPDATE: Looks like things have started to level out, monitoring things closely still – Watching things for next few hours closely as things finish up entirely, but so far so good! Thanks for the prayers!

Snow Leopard Users: Still Compatible!

As new operating systems get released this year for Apple and Microsoft computers FlockHosting is making an effort to be sure our services remain functional – to that end for starters I have purchased the Snow Leopard Upgrade – so far most of the FTP clients are working without issue, some upgrades are required (do your Software Update or check for updates in the application) but so far smooth sailing.

As Windows 7 comes up my copy is already ordered, and application testing will begin again – if at anytime you find a program you can’t get to work, please contact me via trouble ticket for assistance, currently support operating systems which I can personally support are OSX (10.3->10.6), Windows (3.1->Win7), Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Redhat) – so feel free to ask questions if you have them, and I’ll do my best to answer them!
