Hope you all have a blessed weekend!

Getting there!

While I did post the migration notes earlier today, I wanted to give some progress on things related to FlockHosting. Let’s be even more accurate… FlockHosting.com

It’s coming along! I’m not giving all the details away just yet, but after looking over the current site, it needs this done sooner than later!  This new site will have much more updated information, and this shot of the homepage isn’t even complete – so stay tuned!

The current site touts things like “PHP5.x” Did you know you can run PHP7 with a few clicks of a mouse? Another big one is the “Read our statement of faith” – you know where that page is? Neither do I! Somewhere in the last 15 years, it disappeared! So it’s coming back into the new design! Lots to be patched up, cleared up, and cleaned up!

While the big thing right now is servers, once that’s done I’m back on the let’s grow band-wagon! Thank you all of you for your continued support of FlockHosting, for your patience in delays, and such this week – these migrations + daylight savings time did quite a number on me, and my sleep is upside-down-and-backwards! So bear with me after this weekend things should run a LOT smoother as we’ll be all settled in!

Server Migrations Friday

While I’d hoped to have had this out earlier yesterday, I missed it by a mere 2 hours! So here’s the information like last week:

This Friday, March 17th starting at 10:00 PM Pacific. The servers being migrated are:

  • Church (New IP: 67.205.161.18)
  • Lilly (New IP: 23.111.146.77)

This means you’ll need to do some DNS changes if you manage your own DNS the new IP’s are listed above. If you use FlockHosting, these changes will be made as sites transfer, all sites will be on a 5 minute TTL which means every 5 minutes the DNS checks for new DNS, this will return to normal after the migration is complete.

I’ve done a test migration of Church, comes in at around 2+ hours to move all data. Lilly comes in around the same but that’s BEST case, may take longer (could take less!) – but sites should be moved quickly as possible.

Now if your MySQL databases aren’t working you’ll want to reset the password on the new server to do this, you’ll need to:

  1. Login to cPanel
  2. Select MySQL Databases
  3. Scroll to the bottom and find the user attached to your site, click “Change Password.”
  4. Copy and Paste your current password into place and change the password.

This will reset the password to the new secure format + keep you from having to edit wp-config files. However, if you are unsure how to do this, and hit this issue, I’ll be on hand Saturday to assist.

This move should be relatively painless, quick cut-over, all SSD storage now, should give things a bit more pep in their step! This will happen a week from Friday, and then I’ll post the migration IP’s and such then too.

If you have ANY questions before the move, please let me know. If you are unsure how to make these changes on your own self-hosted DNS, please get me a login before, and I can help make the changes. If you have custom DNS in place, in the past the migration process sometimes resets things like MX records, I will have a backup of FH1/FH2, so if you need zone files restored, please let me know.

That’s it! If I have a common set of questions, I’ll make a post of some common ones, if not – prayers are appreciated!

Update:

Unsure about your server name? Two options:

  1. Login to cPanel and then look at the URL bar in your browser, it should have adjusted to the hostname if it reads fellowship or grace – you’re moving this week!
  2. Login to https://secure.flockhosting.com – from there view ALL products, and it will list the Server: next to each product you host with FlockHosting.

Hope this helps!

Why Migrations?

I’ve gotten the question a few times:

“Why are we migrating again? Didn’t we just do this last year?”

Yes, we did. So why again? Let me explain.

The Reasons

Most of the time servers just “work” but as of late some performance issues, security patches, software upgrades, and customer complaints have led to this new migration.

A year ago we made the big jump not because I wanted to, but because of the power issues we were having with a data center the move was not desired but required. My priority to customers outweighs my need for sleep, funds, and I have a commitment to ensure things run smoothly.

Now things as of late have been mixed, network issues, blacklists, etc. but these come and go, however, a year ago the plan was to make a big move to new hardware with SSD’s. Having everything on the newest CloudLinux/CentOS so we’d have longer lifespans on software and updates – but when you can’t even keep the lights on, and some clients leave? You move.

Why this time?

Honestly? It is time. We jumped from the old configuration to the same exact thing, just different location to get out of a datacenter who couldn’t keep the lights on, we moved to fresh hardware, but the configuration stayed the same.

This time I have planned this out for over 6 months. I’ve toyed with various methods, trying out the new features of cPanel, Cloudlinux, and I have reviewed the hardware out there ensuring that in all 4 servers moving, things will run smoothly, high performance, and have room to expand if needed without having to do another huge migration anytime soon.

Servers Are Closed.

Now, this is some news I didn’t share in the FlockUpdate, but I’ll touch on it here. Grace, Lilly, Church and Fellowship after the migrations are closed. No more accounts will be added to them.  I have 3 new servers coming in after next week’s migration, Church Hosting (Sanctuary), WordPress Hosting (Press) and Standard Hosting (Ezra) – these should go online within 2-3 days of the migrations being done and will start accepting customers right away!

Yes, 3 server types! Here’s what each has different:

  • Church Hosting – Larger Storage to store church email & files.
  • WordPress Hosting – Optimized for WordPress only, no other website types.
  • Standard Hosting – The classic does it all platform.

So things should grow nicely into these new servers. I am definitely looking forward to WordPress hosting, going to open it up for more testing after migrations so stay tuned for how you can test it out!

There you have it! The reasons, the plan, I actually wanted to type this out because if I talked about it all in the FlockUpdate, we’d all still be watching it as it’d be hours long! 🙂 If you have any questions about migrations or input what-so-ever, post a comment or get in touch with me!
