Friday Migrations – Church, Grace, Lilly @ 10PM (Pacific)

Good Afternoon!

It is time for another round of migrations this Friday for Church, Grace, and Lilly. The move should be super straightforward – if you are using your DNS you’ll need to make some changes, this includes Cloudflare users too – so without further delay here are the new IP changes, RED are the old and GREEN are new:

church.flockhosting.com
142.54.180.243 -> 173.82.245.171

lilly.flockhosting.com
23.111.146.75 -> 173.82.106.161

grace.flockhosting.com
23.111.146.78 -> 173.82.106.154

Starting at 10 PM Pacific time the server data will begin moving over, rebuilding on the new hardware – in most cases with domains using FlockHosting DNS the change should be super quick – cutting over once the moves are done within 10 minutes. Now if you are using your own DNS provider and want a similar situation then adjust the TTL column to say 500 – this varies with each DNS provider but the TTL column in most is accessible and will greatly increase the speed at which the site cuts to the new IP on Friday.

Now to clarify it’s OK to adjust the TTL now. This won’t hurt anything, but don’t change the IP till Friday at which point anytime after 10 PM will be fine.

Now as always if you have questions, concerns, or just need help on this move please don’t hesitate to leave a comment, open a ticket or schedule a call with me.

Some Updates on Projects!

Good Afternoon!

It has been a busy couple of weeks, and some things have been going on behind the scenes! What you may ask? Well, a few things are wrapped up:

  1. Full Rollout of Full Metrics Monitoring – Gives me an overview of server resources/usage and helps me plan a bit more! Also alerts me on spikes/etc. very handy tools in place!
  2. Migration of FlockHosting.com to new hardware, running smoothly!
  3. Building out John & Noah – New hardware will be noted below, but servers are still behind firewalls only viewable to me, but looking good!
  4. New Hardware Provisioning this week for Grace, Lilly, and Church!

So that’s a pretty full list! So what does that mean you to? Let’s go over it:

The Review!

#1: This is general upkeep, these new monitoring tools give me a great overview of servers, and allow me to make thresholds which alert me when say a CPU is maxed out and help get the server before it’s overloaded! Also with migrations, it’s done great to keep me aware of how fast things are going and load impacted as more users are migrated, let’s me know if more memory is needed or CPU long-term great for growth.

#2: The site had no problems, just was on a server that needed some upgrades, more of an FYI than anything, but helps keep the primary website secure, safe and running smoothly.

#3: John & Noah. What are these? John is the 4th Church Hosting server and will be the final for a while, stretching the budget a bit to build these out but I wanted one more box to really balance out hosting, some heavy hitters are on Fellowship and Church, wanting to move some sites around to allow things to run smoother for everyone, and avoid the continued load issues. Noah follows the same idea except for balancing things out from Grace & Lilly. So If your site is running a bit hot, once other migrations are done you’ll be notified and data migrated – this is a case-by-case basis, so don’t expect you will be included, but if you feel you may benefit? Leave a comment/Open a ticket and let me know.

#4: Grace, Lilly, and Church! This is the one folks have been asking about, it was mentioned and nearly a month went by without any update. The server hardware should be ready to go on Friday. I’d love to make the move on Friday if at all humanly possible, but realistically and allow things like sleep it’s going to be next Friday. So 10/19/2018 things will move off the older hardware. The move is super simple and if you have purchased your domain or use FlockHosting’s DNS you’re done. Nothing to do – if you don’t you’ll need to change an IP or two in your configuration.

All in all, this should make this month a tad busy too! BUT it should simplify things, and improve performance overall across the board! Tie in the audit I’ll be starting soon, hopefully clearing off any old accounts which missed the cancel request for clearing, it should give us a lean, mean, hosting machine 😀

So I’ll be emailing folks too regarding the migrations, but for now, that’s your quick update! Have a great rest of your week!

2015 Mid-Year Check-in!

summertimeSummer is Here!

And we are at the halfway mark for 2015! Hard to believe we’ve come this far this fast! Seems like just the other day the new year was here, but while I don’t care to believe it, it is indeed here! So let’s do a quick rundown of where we are at in these 6 short months, and what’s to come!

Dreaded Spam

Spam has been kicked around and kicked back, and currently sadly we are in a mode of its kicking back, even some of our new filtering isn’t doing as great as I’d like, but spammers are clever and they find new ways to get their garbage into our emails!

So what’s the plan? Well I’m trying out several systems – one of which is showing an amazing set of results! Out of all the mail scanned it did ding 4 false positives, easily whitelisted & released from a quarantine! One feature many customers have been asking for to return from the ASSP days – now this is an external service, and thus it has a cost, but it’s a minimal one, basically $0.25/user/month, and I must say, very pleased.

I am still testing, but if all goes well I’ll be HAPPY to help folks get things setup on their domain, and work out all the pricing and such (hoping to make it FREE!!) Hang tight, less spam may be in your future!

Church Hosting

It keeps going and going and going and going! Still have some folks in the queue for nearly a week, it’s taking a bit longer to fill orders, between fraud orders, and too orders which have domains that don’t seem like the name of the church, joesplumbingsupply.com – churchy right? (not a real domain I’ve gotten, just a random similar example).

Aside from the delay in orders, we are quickly filling the server to its final spot – in about 15 church hosting spots I’ll be suspending sign-ups until I can get another server lined up, and as always I’d appreciate your help! I’m not going to beg, and I’m not going to push, but if you have any desire to donate, please check the old Crowd Funding site and you can donate – thanks to those of you who have, some even have picked up a monthly $1 donation during hosting sign-up! Very cool, thanks to everyone who has supported so far!

PHP & MySQL Upgrades

We have come to a crossroads, PHP is needing to be upgraded, as is MySQL, so what do we do? We upgrade – July 31st all servers fleet wide will be making an upgrade to newer PHP and MySQL, this is a must for security & safety’s sake.

If you have old software which can not be safely upgraded, please contact me – there are options on Grace currently which would allow you at your own risk to use older PHP at the very least – so be in touch, this warning comes over a month ahead of time, so please be aware this must happen.

Use an app you are unsure about? Check with the software provider or open a ticket and I’ll assist you further in figuring out where you stand!

Server Migration & Upgrades

I’ve been looking at servers honestly – currently Lilly and Grace are two of the highest density servers we’ve had in the history of FlockHosting, Ruth on the other hand really never has been highly used, there are a handful of customers on the server in comparison to others, so what do we do?

Let’s give it a fresh breath of life. Slated for August 31st there will be new hardware, new software, a fresh rebuild to provide even better support than ever before for all customers, and hopefully a new home for newer customers moving forward! Keep your eyes on your inbox for heads up on times, and things to be aware of in the move!

Upgrades are also slated for Lilly, some additional hardware and software upgrades, Grace will get some software upgrades too – but all in all the fleet is performing great!

and more to come…

So much more I have planned, but some I want to finish the planning before, like changes to security when it comes to you getting your IP blocked, FlockHosting Design, FlockHosting Code (Custom Programming & Mobile App Design) and a slew of other products I hope to get done, now if a certain 10 month old allows it, we shall see 🙂 but hang tight as we get going into this second half of the year! Let’s make the last half of 2015 awesome!

State of the Server Address

What a week! For me aside from the setup of Grace, I’ve built out 8 additional servers for a long-time server customer (rebuilding his fleet) and still have Church Hosting hardware coming along,  it’s been a whirlwind! Migration

So what’s this post about? Well it’s a way for me to apologize for hiccups folks had, some had issues with email, some with versions of PHP, some with MySQL, wasn’t a flawless move, but never is in some areas when it comes to upgrading software, but the email and password issues, just did not foresee happening, in any migration we’ve never had these sorts of issues, but smoother sailing is here! I’m sorry you guys had issues, and I’m sorry where things just completely fell flat, but working to ensure things like that don’t happen again!  For now, here’s a quick rundown with all the migrations where we stand with hardware:

Server: Grace

Grace is up and running, we had some minor hiccups with the migration for folks using older scripts, we are using some newer tech, and older scripts aren’t playing nice – working on getting everything running smoothly, if you are having issues please let me know!

A few folks have reported password issues, cPanel works, FTP doesn’t, unsure of the cause, but if you are having this issue open a ticket and I can reset your password across the board, if wanting a quicker fix and can login to cPanel, simply change the password should update FTP.

Lastly Email filtering, this has been a big issue for everyone lately spam is horrible right now, and even FlockHosting Servers are getting blocked for legitimate email! I’m working on a few options to try and get things running cleaner at no cost, so hang tight! If it’s really bad please open a ticket and I’ll help however I can!

Server: Lilly

Lilly is running great, it’s been online since late July, and problems have been very few, additional memory and alternative MySQL configuration have run very smoothly, but too like other servers in the fleet some issues persist with spam, but all in all this new kid on the block is running great!

Servers: Faith & Shepherd

This weekend (Saturday) these servers will be retired and shutdown. They have served FlockHosting well for a LONG time! I’ll be pulling one last backup tonight just-in-case, should anyone be coming late to the party of migrations and saying “BUT CHUCK! IT’S ALL BROKE!” I’ll have one final snapshot of what was, but moving forward Grace is your kid!

Server: Church

Now this is the latest in the works, I am hoping to have the hardware at some point soon! This will combine Fellowship & Koinonia into a single server which will have even more power and storage!

Server: Ruth

Ruth isn’t going anywhere, running on some newer hardware itself, it will be the last of the low-volume servers on-network, customers should expect any migration plans for this server, you are safe! 🙂

Thank You!

I really appreciate everyone’s patience in these moves! I know not always easy to have your site be in-transit, or email issues, password issues etc. but as always I’m working to ensure you are having as few issues as possible! Stay tuned, Church Hosting likely moving this next week! So new IP, new hardware, stay tuned & Have a BLESSED weekend!
